The Mets have reportedly made a significant offer to reigning NL Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer.
According to multiple reports, the New York Mets have officially made an offer to star free agent pitcher Trevor Bauer.
Bauer reportedly wants to set a new record for pitchers offseason, breaking the mark set by Gerrit Cole’s $36 million average annual value with the Yankees. His rivalry with Cole goes back to their days as teammates at UCLA, amplified by their selections in the 2011 draft. The Mets offer is said to be less than Cole’s record number, however.
Bauer is among the most controversial players in MLB today. His personality both on and off the field has drawn both love and hate.
Bauer On the Mound.
On the field, Bauer has been consistently up and down. In 2018 and 2020 Bauer put together two phenomenal seasons, including winning the NL Cy Young in 2020. The issue is that Bauer didn’t make 30 starts in either season, 27 in 2018 and 11 in 2020.
Meanwhile, Bauer has had an ERA over 4.10 in every other season in his career. That includes 2019 when he had a 4.48 ERA and a 4.34 FIP.
Bauer also famously wears his emotions on his sleeve on the field. Again, no problem with that as players showing emotion on the field is great for the game. Pitchers screaming after big Ks, bat flips after home runs, and things of that nature are great for the game.
What’s not great for the game is moments like these,
From a pure baseball perspective. The Mets money would likely be better spent upgrading elsewhere. It’s true they need another starting pitcher, but they have a bigger need in centerfield.
Brandon Nimmo, although a great offensive player, is one of the worst defensive centerfielders in MLB. Simply by upgrading in centerfield, the Mets will improve their pitching staff. Better defense equals less runners on, which means less runs allowed.
Bauer’s Issues.
Bauer is outspoken on just about everything on Twitter. Normally, that would be just fine, after all, that’s his right. However, Bauer has been accused numerous times of harassing and attacking women on Twitter.
In one instance he reportedly tweeted at a female college student over 80 times without reply. That’s textbook sexual harassment. It never got to the level of Jared Porter’s harassment with photos involved, but it’s still a disturbing action.
Bauer has since apologized for this, but he’s continued to attack women on Twitter. It seems though, that the Mets are not turned off by Bauer’s online presence.
No matter what the Mets do moving forward, it’s clear that they are at least interested in Trevor Bauer. Whether that interest eventually culminates in a contract is yet to be seen, but his personality flags give us reason for pause.

After a day of trolling fans with his online merch store, Trevor Bauer has made the decision to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, spurning the New York Mets.

The move comes after a long day of rumors and tolling.
It all started late Thursday night, when multiple reports suggested Bauer and the Mets were deep into contract conversation. The Dodgers were still hanging around, but most informed speculation believed he was headed to the Mets with a decision looming in the next 24 hours.
The speculation only ramped up when Bauer leaked Mets merchandise on his online merch store. The Mets merch was quickly taken down and replaced by Dodgers merch, which was then replaced by Angels merch. All a clever marketing scheme to get as many eyes on Bauer as humanly possible.
Bauer wanted to have the world’s attention as he made his announcement, in a way only a star free agent can. That’s exactly what he got.
This should come as no surprise as Bauer is a very loud personality on Twitter. He made sure to announce when free agency started that he and his agent Rachel Luba were the only reliable source of information. Then he proceeded to announce his decision just as every reporter did.
His big personality has put many people off, and it’s only going to be magnified more now in Los Angeles with a major contract.
Maybe the most surprising thing is that Bauer turned down a more lucrative contract. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets had the highest offer.

With Bauer off the market and headed to the Dodgers, the Mets will turn their attention towards other pursuits. Namely, Jackie Bradley Jr.
The free agent center fielder would give the Mets much needed defense in center field. He becomes the likely primary target for the Mets as the offseason continues to roll on.

As much fun as it is for the rest of us to wheel and deal from our recliners, there’s a certain element of being a Major League Baseball general manager that can only be understood by those who have occupied the position.
So of all the many billions of people on planet Earth, it’s fair to say former Mets general manager Steve Phillips, who once offered more than $100 million to Mike Hampton, had the most unique understanding of what the last few days must have been like for Sandy Alderson as the current Mets baseball decision-maker tried luring Trevor Bauer to Queens.
“I remember saying the words вЂSeven years, $105 million’ and I’m thinking to myself вЂOh my gosh, what am I doing why am I offering seven years and $105 million to a pitcher?’” Phillips said in September 2018. “And then when he decided the schools were better in Colorado and the eight years and ($121) million he got from the Rockies was the better deal, there was a sense of relief.”
It’s more likely Alderson grimaced and went for a long walk this afternoon (the days of Mets general managers throwing chairs when things don’t go their way are in the past), when Bauer agreed to a three-year deal with the Dodgers worth a potential $102 million over a three-year deal with the Mets worth a reported $105 million. After all, executives don’t usually offer a player nine-figure deal with the expectation they’ll be happy if he says no.
But at some point, perhaps sooner than later, Alderson might look back upon Bauer’s decision with a Phillips-ian exhale that could blow down trees, even if Bauer is unlikely to be as miserable in Los Angeles as Hampton was in Colorado.

Bauer could even pitch up to the contract (relatively speaking) in Los Angeles. But like Hampton 20 years ago, Bauer surely raised his price by milking for all it was worth his good fortune of being in the right place at the right time.
Hampton was 85-53 with a 3.44 ERA (121 percent better than the league average) and a 1.37 WHIP while producing 18.1 WAR, per Baseball-Reference, over 1,260 2/3 innings. But he hit the open market shortly after his 28th birthday after going 22-4 for the Astros in 1999 and winning NLCS MVP honors for the Mets in 2000.
Following the 2000 season, his agent, Mark Rodgers, told the New York Post “(t)his is going to be a very slow process,” and Hampton entertained offers from at least a dozen teams before signing with the Rockies.
Bauer is 75-64 with a 3.90 ERA (113 percent better than the league average) and a 1.27 WHIP while producing 17.5 WAR over 1,190 innings. But he became a free agency weeks before his 30th birthday and immediately after winning the Cy Young in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
Bauer, with social media at his disposal and a self-promoting streak never displayed by Hampton, turned his free agency into the story of an otherwise dull winter. The Reds were barely eliminated from the playoffs when Bauer wondered how much better the Yankees and Padres would look with another elite starter. Later, Bauer and his agent, Rachel Luba, livened up the week between Christmas and New Year’s by arguing with Jon Heyman over the latter’s reports on the contract Bauer was seeking. Like Hampton, Bauer was rewarded with best pitcher in the world money. But he won’t have to perform as such for the defending World Series champion Dodgers, who already have a budding ace in Walker Buehler and an ace emeritus in Hall of Fame-bound Clayton Kershaw as well as 24-year-old Julio Urias, who had a 1.17 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 23 innings in the playoffs last season and recorded the final out of the World Series clincher.
For $121 million, Hampton was expected to serve as the Rockies’ ace while figuring out a way to succeed in a mile-high environment known for permanently damaging, if not outright ruining, the careers of starting pitchers. The late Darryl Kile, Hampton’s former teammate with the Astros, posted a 3.79 ERA with Houston before signing with the Rockies following the 1997 season. He struggled to a 5.84 ERA in Colorado in two seasons before being traded to the Cardinals, for whom he had a 3.54 ERA in two-plus season before his sudden death on June 22, 2002.
Hampton actually got off to a fast start in Colorado — he went 9-2 with a 2.98 ERA in his first 13 starts — but went 21-28 with a 5.75 ERA in two seasons with the Rockies before he was traded to the Braves.
The deal Phillips didn’t make for the Mets provided benefits that lasted nearly two full decades. The Mets were awarded a compensatory draft pick for losing their own free agent — a pick Phillips used to select David Wright, who collected the most RBIs, hits and runs and the second-most homers in Mets history and was on a Hall of Fame track before back problems derailed his career.
“It’s funny how things work,” Phillips said shortly before Wright’s final major league games in September 2018. “Because if Hampton had said yes, we wouldn’t have had the draft pick compensation and we wouldn’t have gotten David Wright.”
There’s no compensatory draft pick for losing out on Bauer, so if the Mets find their next great homegrown position player in the 2021 draft, it won’t be thanks to Bauer. But there’s a pretty good chance Friday’s loss will yield plenty of short-term benefits, off as well as on the field.
But earlier this week, The Athletic reported ex-Mets manager Mickey Callaway — hired by Alderson following the 2017 season — sent lewd and unsolicited messages to at least five female reporters dating back to his days as the Indians’ pitching coach. Alderson said in a statement Tuesday he “…was unaware of the conduct described in the story at the time of Mickey’s hire or at any time during my tenure as general manager,” which ended when he stepped aside following a recurrence of cancer in June 2017.
The aforementioned very uncomfortable press conference still needs to happen, although now Alderson and Steve Cohen can discuss how they’re going to improve their vetting and hiring practices without also explaining how they vetted and hired Bauer. One match for the search term Trevor Bauer harassment is one match too many. There’s more than one match. (The silliest thing Hampton ever said was insisting he signed with the Rockies in order to keep his kids in one school district all year)
In baseball-only terms, Francisco Lindor, Carlos Carrasco and James McCann are already Mets, which means the addition of Bauer would have been the topper to a what has been a fine winter. This isn’t 2000 all over again, when Hampton’s return would have provided the much-needed centerpiece after the Mets dropped out of the Alex Rodriguez sweepstakes. (The last item in the Post notebook in which Rodgers declared Hampton would take his time signing a contract? A three-graph blurb about the Mets being outbid for Japanese star Ichiro Suzuki)
With Bauer in Los Angeles, the Mets have $40 million to spend upgrading at centerfield and in the back of the rotation as well as perhaps at third base and in the bullpen. That’s a lot of chances for Alderson to realize, for a lot of reasons, the best contracts are often the ones you don’t award, and to feel the sense of relief Phillips felt 20 years ago upon seeing a $100 million pitcher head elsewhere.
