п»їHow to Calculate Horse Racing Betting Odds and Payoffs.
It's surprising at how many people make bets on horse races without the slightest understanding of the tote board. While all of those numbers on the board may seem imposing, the odds and payoffs are actually pretty easy to learn. And by doing so, you will be able to make and calculate better bets.
Reading the Win Odds.
The easiest information on the board is the win odds quoted on each horse. They don't tell you what the horse will pay, but the amount of profit you will get and the amount you have to bet to get it. For example, 6-5 means you will get $6 in profit for every $5 you wager, while 20-1 means you get $20 in profit for every $1 you wager. In the latter example, a bet of $2 means you would get $42 back for a winning wager.
Payoffs use the actual odds and are rounded down to the nearest nickel or dime, depending on the rules at that track. This rounding is called breakage.
Calculating the Win Odds on a Horse.
If you want to calculate the exact win odds on a horse, you will need to use a couple of other figures from the tote board:
Total win pool Amount bet on that horse.
The total pool is all the money bet on all the horses to win, but it is not the amount that will actually be paid out to the holders of winning tickets. Before the track pays off the winners, they deduct the "take," which is generally between 14 and 20 percent and is different in every state. This money goes to pay state and local taxes, payment for the horsemen, expenses at the track, and the track's profit.
To calculate the exact odds on your horse, just subtract the take from the total pool, then subtract the amount bet on your horse to give you the amount of cash to be paid out.
Divide that figure by the amount bet on your horse to get the exact odds. This figure will always be rounded off to the nearest dime (usually) or nickel, as mentioned previously, before the payoffs are calculated. Here is a simple example of win odds calculation:
Total pool: $900 Amount bet on horse No. 1: $300 Take amount: 15 percent $900 minus 15 percent equals $765 $765 minus $300 equals $465 $465 divided by $300 equals $1.55.
Round this amount off to $1.50 for breakage and you get odds of 1.5-1 or 3-2, as it would normally be written, which yields a payoff of $5 on a wager of $2.
Payoffs for $2 Win Bets.
Since most tracks have a $2 minimum bet, below is a handy chart to look up the payoff for a $2 bet at various odds. Remember, your actual payoff may differ from this chart, as the odds on the tote board are rounded off, so 2-1 odds on the tote board may actually be 1.9-1 or 2.2-1.

Horse Betting Odds, Explained.
With complicated, ever-changing win rates and different types of bets, it can be difficult to figure out how horse racing bets actually work. So, how do you decide which horse to wager on and calculate how much you could win? All is revealed in this simple guide to understanding horse betting odds.
What is pari-mutuel betting?
In the U.S., most states that allow betting on horse racing use the pari-mutuel system. This is also known as pool betting and is commonly used in short sporting events such as horse or greyhound racing where the participants finish in a ranked order. All the money wagered on a particular race is placed into a pool and after a house take is deducted, the rest of the money is divided between the people who bet on the winning horse.
In a pari-mutuel system, you don’t know exactly how much you’ll win when you place a bet because the odds change as more people wager. This is different from fixed-odds betting, including money-line or spread betting, where the payout amount is already set at the time you place a bet. Here’s a step-by-step guide to how pari-mutuel horse betting works:
All bets on a particular horse race are placed into a pool.
A house commission to cover taxes, expenses, and profits is deducted from the pool. This is called takeout and usually amounts to 15 to 22 percent of the pool, depending on the track and the type of bet.
Payoffs are calculated by sharing the remaining pool among all the people who placed bets on the winning horse.
For example, in a five-horse race, the following amounts were bet on each horse:
This gives a total pool of $1,900. Next, the house deducts its 15 percent take from the pool:
$1,900 – $285 = $1,615.
Say horse No. 3 won the race. That would mean the remaining pool of $1,615 would be divided between the people who bet on that winning horse. So, taking off the $500 they originally bet (which will be returned to them), they’re left with a total payout to be shared between them of $1,115:
$1,615 - $500 = $1,115 total payout.
How a horse's payout is calculated.
This payout information can be used to calculate betting odds which will help you figure out how much you could win if you wagered on a particular horse. Using the example above, here’s how to calculate and read the win odds. First, the total payout of $1,115 is divided by the amount of money that was wagered on the winner, horse No. 3:
This amount is then rounded down to the nearest nickel or dime (this is called breakage), so in this example:
$2.23 becomes $2.20.
This is converted into odds of 2.2-1, which means for every $1 you bet, you get $2.20 back plus your original dollar. To avoid using decimals, the odds are either rounded or multiplied until you reach whole numbers, so in this example the win odds would be written as 2-1. This tells you that for every $1 you bet, you’ll win approximately $2 plus your original $1, giving you a total of $3.
So, the final odds for betting on horse No. 3 are approximately 2-1, or 11-5 in international markets.
At horse racing tracks the win rate and payout information is easily available on the tote board, which is usually visible from nearly any part of the track. When you bet online, there are sites you can use such as Oddschecker for international racing or the America’s Best Racing gambling calculator that will tell you the odds and win rates.
Types of horse racing bets.
There are various types of pari-mutuel bets you can place in horse racing, these include:
Win: You bet on the horse you think will win.
Place: You bet on a horse to finish second, but win if the horse comes first or second.
Show: You bet on the horse you think will finish third and win if the horse finishes first, second, or third.
Exacta: You bet on which horses you think will come in first and second and to win, you must get them in the correct order.
Trifecta: You bet on which horses you think will come in first, second, and third in that exact order.
Superfecta: You bet on which horses you think will come first, second, third, and fourth in exact order.
Boxed bets: You can pay extra when placing an exacta, trifecta, or superfecta bet to wager on horses to finish in the top two, three, or four in any order.
Calculating horse betting odds can be tricky, especially when it comes to a pari-mutuel system where the win odds and payouts are constantly changing. For further help understanding bets, check out this guide on how horse betting payouts work, look at win rates displayed at race tracks, and use online odds calculators.

Betting Odds Explained.
Betting odds explained.
Betting odds can appear daunting at first glance but they are actually quite straightforward to calculate. We’ve devised a beginners guide to explain betting odds.
How do odds work?
When looking at the odds (price) of a horse, the two formats used are decimals and fractions. Betting exchanges operate in decimals, whereas fixed-odds betting firms generally operate in fractions.
When determining the returns of a fractional bet, the second number always suggests the stake and the first number denotes what the profit will be if the bet wins. Take 4/1 as an example. If you stake ВЈ1 on a horse, then you stand to win ВЈ4 if the selection wins the race, which excludes your initial stake. In contrast, the decimal format factors in the initial stake. Betting odds of 4/1 would equate to 5.0 in decimal terms, 5/1 would be 6.0, and so forth.
See the chart below for a breakdown of betting odds in both fractional and decimal format, showing forecasted returns to ВЈ5 level stakes for the key prices in a market.
Knowing your odds.
wdt_ID Fractional Decimal WIN RETURNS FROM
If you want to work out your winnings from a multiple bet such as an accumulator or lucky 15, you can use our betting calculator to find out instantly what you’ve won.

Understanding Odds.
What the numbers mean.
There are two ways odds – or prices – are displayed at racecourses in Britain: the traditional fractional system or the more recently introduced decimal system.
Fractional odds:
These are usually displayed in this format: 4/1.
In spoken form this is “Four-to-one” and sometimes this can be written as: 4-1.
Odds are just maths. To illustrate some examples, let’s call each number a unit. So:
4/1: For every 1 unit you stake, you will receive 4 units if you win (plus your stake). 7/2: For every 2 units you stake, you will receive 7 units if you win (plus your stake). 9/4: For every 4 units you stake, you will receive 9 units if you win (plus your stake).
If you see fractional odds the other way round – such as 1/4 – this is called odds-on and means the horse in question is a hot favourite to win the race.
In spoken form this is “Four-to-one on”.
1/4: For every 4 units you stake, you will receive 1 unit if you win (plus your stake). 1/2: For every 2 units you stake, you will receive 1 unit if you win (plus your stake).
Sometimes you will see Evens or EVS displayed. This is the equivalent of a 1/1 fraction. Again it means the horse in question is expected to win the race.
EVS: For every 1 unit you stake, you will receive 1 unit if you win (plus your stake).
Decimal odds:
These are usually displayed in this format: 5.00.
5.00: Simply multiply this number by your stake to calculate your total potential returns if you are placing a win bet. Unlike fractional odds, your stake is already factored into this price i.e. this is the equivalent of 4/1 plus the 1 unit you stake.
Favourites:
Each race has a favourite. This is the horse most likely to win, which is reflected in having the shortest price displayed with betting operators.
You will see an F alongside the horse’s odds when they are the favourite. If more than one horse has the same odds of winning according to the betting market, this will be displayed as JF, meaning joint-favourite.
What about odds when betting each-way?
Racecourse bookmakers operating at Jockey Club Racecourses must meet (or exceed in the customer’s favour) a standard set of terms if you decide to place an each-way bet.
You will appreciate it is not affordable for bookmakers to pay out on all four places in a four runner race (!) so these agreed terms concerning place part of your each-way bet have to vary dependent on the number of runners and type of race. These are:
• Races with 3 or runners: win bets only, unless the bookmaker chooses to offer 1/5 (one fifth) of the stated odds for finishing 1st or 2nd • Races with 3 or 4 runners: 1/5 (one fifth) of the stated odds for finishing 1st or 2nd • Races with 5 to 7 runners (inclusive): 1/4 (one quarter) odds for finishing 1st or 2nd • Races with 8 or more runners: 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd • Handicap races with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive): 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd • Handicap races with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive): 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th • Handicap races with 22 or more runners: 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Horse Betting Odds Explained.
Bet On Horses To Win The 2020 Triple Crown.
One of the most popular events that you can bet on when it comes to horse betting is the Triple Crown. The Triple Crown is the most prestigious horse racing event that spans across three different races. The three jewels of the Triple Crown are the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. Very few horses get the opportunity to race in the Triple Crown and even fewer have successfully won all three races. The Triple Crown is exciting because of the potential that a horse will win all three races.
2018 Belmont Stakes Odds Explained.
The Belmont Stakes – the last leg of the Triple Crown is always ran the third Saturday following the Preakness Stakes. Betting on the Belmont Stakes is very similar to betting on any other horse race. You can see how well a horse might do based on the posted odds. If a horse’s odds are at 7-2, then for every two dollars you put down, you will win seven dollars. 1-1 odds mean that a horse will only payout one dollar for every dollar you wager. But that means everyone believes that particular horse is going to win. When you are betting on the Belmont Stakes or any other horse race, you need to observe how everyone is betting so you can maximize your profits.
Common Wager Types When Betting On Horse Races.
There are a variety of wager types which are prevalent in horse racing which is divided into two main categories. ‘Straight wagers’ are bets placed on a single horse to have a particular finish while ‘exotic wagers’ are bets placed on multiple horses to finish in a particular order in a race. Straight wagers are typically brief and to the point with a clear payout while exotic wagers are typically higher priced with rougher odds however with fantastically large payouts. We will cover the most common wager types which you will find at a live racetrack or an online racebook.
Straight Wagers - The Most Normal Type Of Horse Betting Odds.
In a straight wager at the track, a bettor is going to have 4 main bets to choose from which he or she can place on a single horse at a time. The odds on straight wagers are some of the more favorable in pari-mutuel betting although they do not offer very high payouts unless a bettor is picking a horse with dismal odds to outright win a race. The most common straight bets are as follows:
Win: A bet on a horse to ‘Win’ means that the bettor believes that the horse will finish in 1st place of a race. Any other result would mean a losing bet.
Place: A bet on a horse to ‘Place’ is when a bettor believes that the horse will finish in either 1st or 2nd place, no matter the order. The bettor will win if the horse finishes in either of the top two spots but any other place will result in a losing bet.
Show: A bet on a horse to ‘Show’ is to wager that the horse will finish either in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place, no matter the order. This bet may not offer a high payout as the likelihood of a horse finishing anywhere in the top three positions is much more likely than a ‘Win’ or a ‘Place’ bet.
Across the Board: This bet is pricier but ensures the bettor a variety of ways to win. An ‘Across the Board’ bet on a particular horse means that the bettor is making three separate bets all together in one, comprising ‘Win’, ‘Place’ and ‘Show’. If the horse wins the race, the bettor will win the payout for all three bets. If the horse finishes 2nd, the bettor will win the payouts for both ‘Place’ and ‘Show’. If the horse finishes third, the bettor only wins the ‘Show’ payout. If the horse finishes in 4th place or worse, the bettor wins nothing.
Exotic Wagers - Exotic Horse Wagers Are Where The Big Money Is Won.
Exotic wagers are a bit more complex than straight wagers and include multiple horses finishing in a particular order rather than an outright prediction of the outcome of a single horse. They are much harder to hit upon but the payouts can be quite vast. There are two varieties of Exotic Wagers with one being “Horizontal” and the other being “Vertical”. Horizontal Exotics are placed on multiple horses in one particular race whereas Vertical Exotics are placed over multiple races on a particular horse or horses. We have compiled a list of the most common Exotic Wagers which one will find at any live racetrack as well as on an online racebook.
Horizontal Exotic Wagers For Horse Betting.
Exacta: An Exacta wager is made on the top two horses to finish the race in an exact order. The bettor must successfully predict the winner and runner-up in precisely that order to win. Even if the bettor picked the right two horses but they didn’t finish in the right order, the bettor will have lost the bet.
Quinella: A Quinella wager is the same as an Exacta wager except that the bettor does not have to pick the horses in order. So long as the two chosen horses finish in the 1st and 2nd place, the bettor will have won his or her bet.
Trifecta: A Trifecta is much more difficult to hit on than an Exacta as it involves the 3rd place horse as well as the winner and runner up. A Trifecta is only successful if the bettor has predicted the top three finishers of a race in their exact order. Any other combination results in a losing bet.
Superfecta: The Superfecta wager is the most difficult of all of the Exotic Wagers and features the highest payout in all of pari-mutuel betting however with fantastically difficult odds to win. A bettor must successfully pick the top four horses in precise order in order to win. There is no other combination type which would result in a win other than correctly predicting the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place horses as they finished. While it is unlikely to predict such a result of a horse race, many tracks and online racebooks entice bettors to try their luck by offering minimum bets as low as $0.10. People have made tens of thousands of dollars off of a winning $1 Superfecta Wager.
Vertical Exotic Wagers For Horse Betting.
Pick 3/Pick 4: A Pick 3 Wager is when a bettor picks the winner of three races in a row at a track. A Pick 4 is the same yet with a fourth race simply being added.
Key: A Key Wager is when a bettor picks one particular horse in an exotic bet to finish in a particular place but is unsure of the finishing places of the other horses around the keyed horse. A bettor may key a horse to ‘Win’ a race but can use multiple combinations for the 2nd and 3rd placed horses in a Trifecta for instance.
Wheel: A Wheel Wager or “wheeling a horse(s)” is the same as keying on a particular horse to finish in a particular place while betting multiple combinations of the horses ahead or behind it. Wheeling and Keying are nearly synonymous with each other in many instances at different tracks or online racebooks.
Box: “Boxing horses” in exotic bets is a way to get multiple combinations for predicted top finishers when the bettor feels confident in the top contenders but not necessarily their precise placement. For instance, a bettor can pick his top four favorite horses in a Superfecta Box where every combination is picked and he is guaranteed a win provided those four horses take 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. Each box combination bet counts as its own wager however as this betting style can be quite costly. A $2 Box Superfecta of four horses would cost $48.
How do Wager Types Affect Horse Betting Payouts?
You may be wondering how much money you will stand to win off of a successful Straight or Exotic Wager and rightfully you should. But it is important to note that in pari-mutuel betting, the total winnings, or “purse” as it is called in horse racing, varies from race to race, day to day. The amount you stand to win is dependent on the amount of bettors and money wagered on the overall race. Straight Wagers will typically have the best odds however with the lowest payouts whereas Exotic Wagers will have difficult odds yet with impressive payouts. Most races will have updated purses listed before the start of a race along with fractional odds in which a bettor can determine how much they may win. For instance, a horse listed at 20/1 odds means that a bettor will collect $20 on every $1 wagered if that horse were to ‘Win’ a race off of a Straight Wager. All pari-mutuel betting facilities go off of this basic rule of thumb with $2 bets being the minimum. Exotic Wagers can be in the thousands such as the winning $1 Superfecta Wager in the 2010 Kentucky Derby which paid $28,000. If the bettor had wagered $50 instead of $1, they would in fact be millionaires today. Always be sure to check out a race’s purse before placing a bet to determine what winnings may be like and know that you can always count on fractional odds to help guide you.
