Football star Theismann was Twins’ final pick in 1971 amateur draft.
It’s around somewhere. Joe Theismann is sure of it.
Maybe it’s in a drawer near his 1983 NFL MVP award or the other keepsakes from his Super Bowl championship football career. Maybe it’s in a file in the office in his Florida home, or perhaps the Virginia one. Regardless, Theismann, a quarterback, TV analyst, restaurateur, author and motivational speaker, is certain he still possesses one of the most curious mementos of his lifetime of success in sports and business:
A Minnesota Twins contract.
“They offered me $500,” said Theismann, who played a dozen seasons in the NFL and led Washington to two Super Bowls. “It was a cursory offer, but they sent me a letter saying, вЂIf you’re serious about playing baseball, we can talk seriously about money.’ I still have the contract. It’s a nice souvenir.”
But nothing more. With their 39th and final pick of the 1971 amateur draft, the Twins chose the “shortstop from Notre Dame,” better known as the 1970 Heisman Trophy runner-up. Yes, the Twins drafted a future Super Bowl-winning quarterback before the Vikings did, but no, Twins farm director George Brophy had no illusions about the team’s long shot chances of signing Theismann.
“I don’t think we have much chance to get him,” the next morning’s Star Tribune quoted Twins public relations director Tom Mee about the unorthodox selection. “But he indicated last winter that he might choose baseball if football didn’t make him a good offer. Perhaps if he has a bad year, he’ll be interested.”
Perhaps he would have been. Theismann, 70, admits he entertained the thought.
“Yes. I did, because of my love for the game. Baseball had been a part of my life even before football. I played four years of Little League before I ever played Pop Warner,” Theismann said. “I enjoyed playing in high school. I was on all-star teams, tournament teams. My cousin was a second baseman, I was a shortstop, and I loved it. But when I started playing football, I just threw myself into that game.”
But Theismann didn’t have the “bad year” that the Twins hoped for. The star quarterback, who led the Fighting Irish to a 10-1 record, a victory over No. 1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl, and the overall No. 2 ranking to end his senior season, was selected in the fourth round by the Miami Dolphins in the NFL draft the following January. But the Toronto Argonauts outbid Miami, and Theismann took his new CFL team to the Grey Cup as a rookie.
“I got validation. After that sequence of events, you say to yourself, вЂI can do this.’ And I realized I could play professional football,” Theismann said. “But the baseball bug never left me.”
Even now, he watches baseball every chance he gets. He’s watched some Korean baseball during the coronavirus quarantine at his Destin, Fla., home, and even some Rays and Marlins games — “I’m getting ready for football season, so I watch Marlins and Rays games to get used to games without fans,” he quipped.
But his love for his “other” sport goes way back. His baseball career at South River, N.J., High was so stellar, the Pirates invited him to a tryout camp before his senior year, and Theismann knows other major league teams, perhaps including the Twins, had scouted him. He gave it up to quarterback the Irish, but after his college football career ended, Theismann was restless. His math teacher, Jake Kline, was also Notre Dame’s longtime baseball coach, and Kline invited Theismann to join the team for a four-team round-robin tournament in Florida that March.
Theismann played third base — “The shortstop, Phil Krill was on scholarship, so I said, вЂOK, I’ll play third,’?” he recalls — and went 7-for-19 against Michigan State, Colgate and Miami (Fla.), with a triple, four walks and three RBI.
“I had a great series down in Florida, I really did. I was hitting the ball well, and I always had a really good arm,” Theismann said of his .368 career average in his brief college career. “But I was really surprised when the Twins drafted me. It was neat. And I always dreamed about giving it a try, going to training camp, fielding grounders and taking BP [batting practice]. But you weigh the consequences, [consider] if something happened to me on the baseball field and I got hurt — it just wasn’t rational.”
Still, it’s a nice what-if for a professional football player, and a great bit of trivia. “Thirty-ninth round. I love that,” Theismann said. “Whenever I see Mike Piazza, I always give Mike a bunch of grief. Yeah, maybe I was 39th round, but he was drafted in the 60s or 70s 1/8 62nd].”

When discussing the 2021 NFL Draft, the conversation generally begins at No. 2 overall because Clemson's Trevor Lawrence had been considered the unanimous top quarterback option. Unanimous no longer. Former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann joined CBS Sports HQ during Super Bowl week coverage to discuss a wide array of subjects, including his belief that BYU's Zach Wilson is a better quarterback prospect.
"Honestly, yes. [It's] really close. We are sort of splitting hairs here a little bit but I would [take Wilson over Lawrence] as a matter of fact," Theismann said on CBS Sports HQ, with host Amanda Guerra.
The Super Bowl champion is drawn to Wilson's natural talent.
"I think Zach, obviously, I just love the way he throws the football. It is hard to teach. We have seen people learn to perfect it a little bit. He has all the skills; he has a live arm, he has a strong arm, he can put touch on it, he can gun it. He is 6'3", he is not a small guy. He moves around with great athleticism. I think, to me, watching him play quarterback, he looks really ready," Theismann explained.
"Trevor Lawrence is certainly a big kid who can run well, surrounded by terrific talent at Clemson. It is a little bit like Mac Jones at Alabama. They are surrounded by terrific talent and sometimes you look at that talent and say 'did that help the position a lot.' I think in the case of Trevor, being a young guy and as strong and physical as he is, he will have a great opportunity to learn, as will Mac and all the young guys, Justin Fields, as well, out of Ohio State. I just think coming into this particular draft, Zach checks all of the boxes for me. Personally, my choice. My guy. It looks like the Jets may be the ones taking him at 2, which potentially puts Sam Darnold on the market or somewhere else."
Lawrence and Wilson went No. 1 and No. 2 overall in each of CBS Sports' mock drafts last week.
After moving on from former first-round pick Dwayne Haskins, the franchise that employed Theismann for 12 seasons now finds itself in the market for another long-term fit at the quarterback position.
"Drafting at 19, I'm not sure you're going to get what you're looking for in the draft. Joe Montana was a third round pick. I was a fourth round pick. Tom Brady was a sixth round pick. They are probably going to take a quarterback. The question is, who do they like enough to commit a third or fourth or even a second round pick to? I don't believe you want to trade away that No. 1 pick. I do think they are going to add a quarterback to the position for competitive purposes," he said not ruling out pursuit of a veteran through a trade or free agency.
North Dakota's Trey Lance is also regarded as one of the top quarterback prospects available in the 2021 NFL Draft. Cleveland is scheduled to host the event from April 29-May 1.

ASHBURN, Va. - Washington Football Team legend Joe Theismann says he does not believe WFT should "go for broke'' in a trade for Deshaun Watson, noting that he's troubled by the way the unhappy QB is trying to escape the Houston Texans.
"Why did you sign the deal?"
The WFT did make a serious attempt at trading for Matthew Stafford, who landed with the Rams. Washington is clearly shopping for an upgrade at QB, but Theismann wonders if his old team really knows what it's getting into with Watson . and whether Watson knows what he'd be getting into with a different franchise.
"If he gets traded someplace, he doesn't have any input." Theismann told me, meaning that if Watson were to come to Washington, he's not likely to be in a power position to have much say in the operation led by Ron Rivera, Martin Mayhew and Marty Hurney.
"What are you going to offer? How many general managers have you interviewed? How many head coaches have you interviewed," Theismann said, questioning Watson's qualifications for having a voice in franchise decision-making.
"The Watson (situation), I scratch my head over,'' Theismann told me, clearly not a fan of disruptive NFL movement. "This isn't the NBA.''

As much as the Houston Texans have downplayed the possibility of trading quarterback Deshaun Watson this offseason, the QB’s cryptic tweets and reported feelings toward the organization have fueled speculation and overpowered any comments GM Nick Caserio has made.
With many QB-needy teams expected to be active in the market for signal callers, the price tag to acquire Watson would be enormous. The Washington Football Team, who holds all of its first-round picks moving forward, could be a contender for Watson if it’s willing to bid high enough.
However, not everyone in D.C. would be in favor of such a move. Former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann joined the Washington Football Talk podcast for an upcoming episode and talked about the package that the team would have to assemble in order to get Watson.
“Deshaun Watson is not on the top of my list,” Theismann said. “And not because of his talent. But I think that the price you would have to pay to get him doesn’t make any sense. Look at what we’ve been able to do over the last four years with first-round picks. That’s the essence of our defense and we’ve got them for at least two or three years until those contracts start expiring.
“I think the No. 1 [picks are] very valuable to us. All of our draft picks are valuable at this stage as Martin [Mayhew] and Marty [Hurney] start to build and Ron [Rivera] start to build this football team. We’ve built a good foundation; they want to build it going forward.”
Theismann mentioned Wednesday morning on 106.7 The Fan’s Sports Junkies that one “really stupid” trade idea he’d seen tossed around in the media was two first-round picks and defensive end Chase Young for Watson. His response: “Are you out of your mind?”
There’s no denying Watson’s talent. But Theismann prefers to see Washington target a player such as Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Marcus Mariota and use a Day 2 or 3 draft pick on a quarterback that can be developed behind him.
