When you bet a game with a spread, you’ll notice that most of your bets will say -110 or -120. That means that you need to risk $110 in order to win $100. This is called the “juice” or the “vig”. This is essentially how the casinos make their money.
What’s a parlay bet?
A parlay is a bet where you group together a bunch of bets, but must win all of them in order to cash the ticket. These bets can be fun, and depending how many bets you put in, can offer a huge payoff with very little cash to risk. Below is a table that shows general odds on parlays if you are betting regular -110 spreads. This chart is based on risking $100. Remember though, while four teams may hit for you in your five team parlay, that one loss makes the entire bet a loser. So choose carefully!
Have multiple places to bet.
The odds on bets are not necessarily the same from sportsbook to sportsbook. The Chiefs in the example above may be a 9.5 point favorite on one book, but only a 9 point favorite on the other. That’s a pretty important thing, as if you bet the Chiefs -9.5 and they win by 9, you lose your bet. But if you bet them at the other book at -9, then you would have pushed, and gotten your money back. Always look at multiple sites and get the best line possible!
Stay within your means.
We are betting on these games to be entertained. If you go on a losing streak, it happens to everyone. Don’t get out of control and start doubling up, trying to get your losses back. Bet the games to have some extra fun, but don’t go over your head!

Sportsbooks prepare for Super Bowl Sunday, gambling hotline staff offer safe betting tips.
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - The stage is set for Super Bowl 55. Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback of this generation, vs. Patrick Mahomes, the greatest quarterback of the future generation.
Millions of eyes will be on the action in Tampa Bay Sunday, but even more money will be on the line as sportsbooks have proposition bets on everything from the winner of the game to the winner of the coin toss.
“We have everything that could possibly happen in that game up for proposition wagers,” said Johnny Avello, Head of the DraftKings Sportsbook.
Avello says the Super Bowl is largest single-day event for the betting market every year. For this Super Bowl, DraftKings is touting novelty bets like the “Doink Special” based on whether or not the football will hit the post during a field goal.
In 2018, West Virginia became one of the 11 states that allow mobile sports betting. Sportsbook giants like DraftKings opened the market quickly through the use of mobile apps, allowing people to make legal bets without the need to go to a casino.
“In our country it is new, but it has been going on in other countries for many, many years. It has been going on in our country illegally for many years, so it is just being brought to the forefront now,” Avello said.
But with the easing of access and the rapid increase in advertising, addiction specialists have grown concern over the effects on gambling addiction.
“Traditionally, we have not seen that many calls from sports bettors, most of our calls are usually slot machine players,” said Sheila Moran, Director of Communications and Marketing for First Choice Services.
First Choice Services runs the West Virginia 1-800-GAMBLER hotline, providing services to those who struggle with gambling addiction.
Moran says after sportsbook apps became legal, the phone bank saw more calls from sports gamblers.
“These are people filing second mortgages on their homes, filing for bankruptcy, maybe losing their job. Family unhappy with them. All sorts of consequences and high chance of coping through substance use. Even depression and suicide. So it is a real problem for about 4% of people who place sports bets,” Moran said.
If you are interested in betting on the Super Bowl this weekend or any other sports event, Moran recommends you clearly set and follow limits on spending.
“Treat the cost of gambling as entertainment money, what you would spend on a movie and expect not to get back,” said Moran.
DraftKings staff say West Virginians favor the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Super Bowl this year.
The game will air at Sunday, February 7th at 6:30 p.m. on WDTV.

Sports Betting Tips: How to Read Gambling Odds.

Sportsbooks list odds or payouts one of three ways: in decimal format, in what is known as “American”, or as a fraction or ratio. It’s important to know exactly how to read all three so as never to be cheated.
How to Read Gambling Odds: Decimals.
Decimal format has become more widespread because of its simplicity.
The number next to a bet is how much a winning stake will multiply by. So, for example, a winning bet priced at 2.00 means the bettor doubles his or her stake. If he or she bet $100, he or she would, of course, get the original $100 stake back, plus another $100 ($100 x 2.00 = $200 total return, original stake included).
Decimal odds must be larger than 1.00, which would imply no winnings. The occasional confusion with decimal format is that it calculates the total ticket, including the original stake, while the other two formats are based on winnings.
To some, this is more intuitive. A winning stake priced at 3.00 means tripling one’s money. Of course, decimals aren’t often whole numbers. A winning stake priced at 1.65 means the bettor gets his or her money back and wins another 65 percent of that original stake ($100×1.65=$165 ticket — $65 in winnings, plus the original stake).
How to Read Gambling Odds: American.
American format is based on $100. The odds will either begin with a plus or a minus. A plus represents an underdog, or “plus money” return, while a minus represents a favorite that offers a potential profit smaller than the stake itself.
The number after a minus represents how much much be staked in order to win $100. The larger the number, the heavier the favorite. A -600 favorite requires the bettor to risk $600 to win $100 for a ticket worth $700.
If it’s a minus payout, divide 100 by the number. So that -600 payout would be 1.167 in decimal form (100/600=1.67)
How to Read Gambling Odds: Fractions.
Fractional odds are more traditional but gradually disappearing in favor of decimal format. Perhaps the math is just too tough for the everyday bettor to figure nowadays.
The denominator (that’s the one on bottom) in the fraction represents the stake; the numerator (on top) represents the winnings , not the total ticket amount.
Example: 3/1 odds (perhaps shown as 3:1) means a bettor wins three times as much as he or she stakes. A $50 bet would win $150 for a total ticket worth $200.
The denominator can be another number, though. A 5/2 payout means for every $2 wagered, a bettor would win $5, on top of the $2 return for the original stake. A $100 bet would win $250 for a ticket worth $350.

There will be more discrepancy in the numbers on different sports at different sports books. The NFL, for example, will have very similar numbers at most of the betting shops you visit. These books change their numbers according to the betting patterns of their customers, so it is not entirely uncommon to find two or three point differences in the lines. When you are betting your hard earned money, getting the best line is a top priority. And since the lines the bookmakers release are increasingly strong, the difference between a point or two is usually the difference between a win or a loss.

Big underdogs often find ways to cover the spread and they rarely give up toward the end of a game in front of the home crowd.
Sports betting tip #7 - Bet at the Right Time The sharp bettors tend to bet underdogs, and they tend to bet them early. Squares usually bet later in the day (or week, for football) and they tend to pick the favorites. If you like an underdog, it is best to get your bet in as late as possible, where there is heavy action from squares on favorites. If you are going to go with a favorite, it is best to place your bet early in the week when the Pros are laying heavy money on the points. Not all games work according to this formula, but it is usually a good rule of thumb.
There are many other important factors when it comes to beating the books. Many people don't have the time to study things like: statistics, line moves, game analysis, team trends, situational trends, Historical angles, valuable lines, inflated numbers on public teams, etc. If this is your situation, there is help available to you.
