Kentucky Derby winner Authentic firmed as the favorite in the final hour before Saturday's Preakness Stakes with Art Collector shortening as the second choice of bettors.

As the Preakness odds continued to move, Friday's Pimlico Special-Preakness double will-pays provided a glimpse of how the final odds may look. Economist and horse owner Marshall Gramm detailed the Preakness imputed odds based on the double below:
The weather at Pimlico has been sunny with the main track rated fast and the turf course yielding after wet weather late in the week.
One change was noted for the Preakness horses. Jesus' Team will run with bar shoes.

Anyway, here's a rundown of the terms you'll want to be familiar with:
BET TO WIN: Well, this one is pretty self-explanatory. You're betting on a horse to win the race. BET TO PLACE: You're betting on a horse to finish either 1st or 2nd in the race. BET TO SHOW: You're betting on a horse to finish either 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the race. EXACTA: You're betting on both the 1st and 2nd place finishers in a race. TRIFECTA: You're betting on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in a race. SUPERFECTA: You're betting on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishers in a race. DAILY DOUBLE: You're betting on the winners of two separate races. PICK 3: You're betting on the winners of three consecutive races. PICK 4: You're betting on the winners of four consecutive races. PICK 5: You're betting on the winners of five consecutive races. PICK 6: You're betting on the winners of six consecutive races.
Obviously, some of those are more challenging endeavors than others so, as is always the case with gambling, play the odds at your own peril.

Excession (30-1)
Trainer: Steve Asmussen.
Jockey: Sheldon Russell.
Current Form: Calumet colt hasn’t been seen since March when he ran home a surprising second at 82-1, only ³/₄ back of Nadal in the Rebel. 1-for-9 overall.
Worth a Wager? A bit ambitious, no? Trying to win the Preakness off the extended layoff? Should be as effective as Chris Wallace at the debate. 10th.
Mr. Big News (12-1)
Trainer: Bret Calhoun.
Jockey: Gabriel Saez.
Current Form: Finished 10 lengths behind Art Collector in the Blue Grass but ran home a strong third at 46-1, about 3 lengths back of Authentic in the Derby.
Worth a Wager? Looked like Mr. was ready to make Big News turning for home but flattened late at Churchill Downs. Can see him racing evenly for seventh.
Art Collector (5-2)
Trainer: Thomas Drury.
Jockey: Brian Hernandez.
Current Form: Versatile colt has won five in a row, scoring from on and off the pace. Powered by the pace-setting Swiss Skydiver in the Blue Grass.
Worth a Wager? Think fast, Brian Hernandez. Jock will have to decide whether to put him in the game early or let others do the dirty work and run at Authentic late. Believing he runs early, lands third.

Swiss Skydiver (6-1)
Trainer: Ken McPeek.
Jockey: Robbie Albarado.
Current Form: Filly has the most starts this year (eight, winning four). Sandwiched a victory in the Alabama around a pair of second-place finishes in the Blue Grass and Kentucky Oaks.
Worth a Wager? She’s got legs and knows how to use them early. Only lady in the field is also only horse other than Authentic proven at distance. Tires to fourth.
Thousand Words (6-1)
Trainer: Bob Baffert.
Jockey: Florent Geroux.
Current Form: Won a 100K wire-to-wire at Del Mar, snapping a three-race losing streak. Earned speed fig, 104, that is only topped by Authentic’s 105.
Worth a Wager? Look out Bob Baffert! Was all set to run for the roses but flipped in the paddock and was scratched. Trainer applies blinkers and makes a rider change to Geroux. Argues early, retreats. Fifth.
Jesus’ Team (30-1)
Trainer: Jose D’Angelo.
Jockey: Jevian Toledo.
Current Form: Claimer has proved competitive. Checked in fourth in the Haskell to Authentic, second in the Pegasus to Pneumatic then third in the Jim Dandy.
Worth a Wager? Always shows up, but in the end he has a claiming win. Does long shot have a prayer? Even with help from above he’s last of 11.
NY Traffic (15-1)
Trainer: Saffie Joseph.
Jockey: Horacio Karamanos.
Current Form: New York-bred gray was defeated by Authentic in his last two starts. Got beat by a whisker in the Haskell but was outrun at Churchill Downs.
Worth a Wager? Ran boldly, taking serious aim at Authentic in the Haskell but came up short. Derby was discouraging, so we will place him sixth.
Max Player (15-1)
Trainer: Steve Asmussen.
Jockey: Paco Lopez.
Current Form: Only horse in field to compete in all three jewels. Showed third in the Belmont behind Tiz the Law, then fifth in the Derby, finishing with good energy in both.
Worth a Wager? Watch the board. Speed wins at Pimlico, but this deep closer may get his table perfectly set and take aim at fast fractions up top. Winner.
Authentic (9-5)
Trainer: Bob Baffert.
Jockey: John Velasquez.
Current Form: Assumed his position on the lead, was confronted by Tiz the Law, then shrugged him off to win the Derby. Champ is 5-for-6 overall.
Worth a Wager? Why not? Won the Roses under a perfectly executed ride by John Velazquez and the Preakness is shorter. Thinking Johnny V will have company and a difficult time rationing speed. Putting our Derby winner second.
Pneumatic (20-1)
Trainer: Steve Asmussen.
Jockey: Johnny Bravo.
Current Form: Ran home a non-threatening fourth to Tiz the Law in the Belmont. Rebounded, defeating a suspect field in the Pegasus under Jersey Joe Bravo.
Worth a Wager? There was a good reason why he was the 4-5 favorite in the Pegasus. Stalker may be going backwards late. Ninth.
Liveyourbeastlife (30-1)
Trainer: Jorge Cabrera.
Jockey: Trevor McCarthy Current Form: Moved to the Jim Dandy off an allowance win and rallied to get second money, ³/₄ of a length ahead of Jesus’ Team.
Worth a Wager? Ghostzapper colt may be a beast stretching longer but may be overmatched. Eighth.
