п»їI need your Wii Tennis tips.
I'm getting better at Wii Tennis, starting to use the power serves and both my partners, and the competition is gradually getting tougher.
I've heard of others attaining the "pro" level of difficulty and I have a feeling I'm going to need every trick in the book.
So, what have you found? Here are some of my tips:
- You can aim your shot at any point on the opposite court. This seems to have to do with the timing of the shot. For example, if you have the racket on your right side and hit the ball early (slightly before it's reached your Mii), the shot will veer left. If you hit it just in time, it will go straight. If you hit it late, it will tend to the right. Generally I try to use my back player to get the other team's back player on one side of the court, then use my front guy to do a soft shot over the net in the other direction.
- Twisting the wiimote one way or the other has an effect, but I couldn't tell you exactly what that is yet. I expect it mostly affects the spin.
- Even though the controller will let you play on the same side of your body for both forehand and backhand shots, I find that my shots turn out really poorly unless I match what my Mii's arm is doing.
What tips has Ars found?
Topspin: Rotate your wrist forward while swinging the remote forward (just as you would in regular tennis). This technique is particulary useful for getting good angles from the backcourt player because you can aim for sharper angles and with enough topspin the ball will still land in the court (just like regular tennis).
Backspin: Rotate your wrist backwards when making a swing. This isn't really a natural tennis movement. so, on the backhand, try holding the remote with your wrist twisted holding the face of the remote towards the screen. When you swing, move your wrist so that the back of the remote is facing towards the tv. Once you get this technique down you can add crazy sidespin, and really fast backspin so that the ball will quickly skip off the surface. This can fool the bots at lower difficulty.
Lobs: Move the remote in an upwards direction, lifting it. Good for defensive shots when you are recovering from an opponents high angled shots. It gives you more time to move back towards the middle (you'll notice bots using this technique when they get better). You can also use it for netplay to lob over the front court player into the back corner of the court.
My general technique is: Use a sharp angled topspin shot to get the bots to one side of the court, and quickly pounce on their return with your net player so that he hits it to the other side. Basically just keep using the net player until you volley the ball away.
Oh.. and once you learn all the tennis techniques, man the game is awesome.
Ben has analyzed it a lot more thoroughly than I have.
My trick is basically tiny fast wrist movements, with the right twist at the end. If you can give it enough of a 'pop' of inertia you get insane swings.
Its actually a little disappointing. Tennis is my fave, but it didn't take me long to suss out the 'flick' and now its almost too easy, at least vs. the CPU.
Yeah, I wish the bots kept improving after 2000/1900. It'd be great to play the game against someone around your own skill level though.
Standing at the net flicking the controller back and forth spastically is surprisingly effective. This tip brought to you by my 9-year-old nephew.
That too. The tennis players are like pinball flippers, they both swing when you swing.
Can anyone reliably produce the crazy spin? I still haven't figured out what motion produces that.
I'm about 850 myself, and am definitely getting a challenge against 1100-point pro bots. Gotta take the time to practice the spins.
In a related vein, does anyone else think it's "cheating" to rely on power serves? I deliberately try to avoid power serves when I play, because I prefer to win through my own skill at returning the ball, not by psyching out the opposition with a fast opening. Anyone else?
Power serves only get you so far before you run into opponents who will hit it back to you just as fast.
My sister can do it every time. But I can't figure out how she is doing it because if I mimck her swing it doesn't work.
I'm at 2025. At this point, the game will deduct points even if you win depending on how you played the game.
My only real strategy is that I return almost all shots with the guy nearest the net, and I keep doing that until I get someone on the CPU team enough out of position for me to hit the ball so far to one side that it's impossible to return. Also, if you aim for the outer foot of the CPU player when that player is really close to the sidelines, the CPU will have to go for the ball, but due to the position it will often hit the ball into the stands.
I suppose I also use the lob trick quite often to give my players a chance to reset their positions. Returning the ball as gently as possible is also a good way to set up a power shot.
For the crazy spin, look at my earlier directions for the backspin. It's just kind of a variant of it, and honestly it's impossible (or very difficult) to describe the exact motions over the internet.
If I had a video camera I'd try to record it..
How to do power serves?
From what I can tell it's just a matter of timing. I think you get the power serve when you hit the ball at its highest point.
Has anyone had any luck getting the player at the net to hit a forehand when he's in the backhand position, or vice versa? So many times the other player has all his players to one side of the court, but my net player only wants to hit towards them, instead of a killer shot away.
Currently at around 1100 skill against the NPCs. One trick, which is not very reliable, is that the NPCs will almost always go for a shot that's going out of court, even when it's impossible to return it. I've even witnessed one NPC go for a ball which bounced off the side of the pole holding up the net - and I got the point!
I can already do the backspin reliably. That doesn't seem to be helping.
Power serve: Indeed it's a timing thing. Really, don't think about how it LOOKS, but rather how it feels. If you practice that and try to forget about swinging at a certain point on the screen - you'll pick it up easier. IMO, diff'rent strokes of course.
Super funky spin: This appears to be something you can do only if the ball is close to your feet and you hit it moderately late with a backspin (slice your hand down and level out). It's also dependent, it seems, on the type of shot coming your way.
There's something to be said in this game for returning shots with lobs or ripping it to the corner until you can get the proper return to put away.
Simply trying to overpower the computer opponents at the higher levels will hurt more than help.
At this point, I'm at about 1900 and rarely lose more than a set a match - but sometimes I get ahead of myself and forget that I need to be patient.
Also helps if you engage in long rallies at first when facing the higher-level foes - they get tired and slow down a bit. You'll see them start sweating.
This is a hell of a game. I seriously hope they turn it into something bigger with online multiplayer possible.

How to Play "Wii Tennis" Really Well.
For a game that is supposed to be the most intuitive on a console which is all about ease of play and appealing to new gamers, Wii Tennis can be surprisingly unintuitive.
It won’t take you too long to work out that you don’t have any control over the movement of your characters but unless you are some kind of gaming savant, you’ll still find yourself mystified by the directions of your shots for quite some time after you start playing.
While simple reflexes can get you past the worst of computer (and human) opponents, if you want to rule the court you’ll have to improve your Wii Tennis chops. To help you do that, here are my top tips:
1. Learn to Direct Your Shots.
In Wii Tennis you don’t control the direction of your shots freely, this is partly done by the computer. Let me explain. Your Miis choose approximately how they respond to each shot coming at them. You need to pay attention to which way the racket is pointing to work out where you can place a shot.
For example, if the ball is coming from the top right of the screen to the bottom left your Mii will most likely hit it diagonally up to the right when you go to play. However, by timing when you hit your shot you can affect the direction of the shot. If you hit early the ball will go further to the right, whereas a late shot will most likely go straight up the court.
To be clear, you waving your hand a certain way has no effect. What matters is when you hit the shot. This is what I mean by not intuitive!
Armed with this knowledge you can begin placing your shots where you want them. When the ball comes to your Mii at the rear of the court, try to hit early so as to send the ball either to the extreme right or left. This will make it more difficult for the other player to respond. Even if they do you can use your front player to smash the ball down the middle of the court to get a point.
Learning to direct your shots is the most important skill you can learn early on as it strips away the apparent ‘randomness’ of the game.
Try practicing how you return shots to see how this works. Hit shots early and see what the effect is and then try again only hitting the ball late. You will soon understand how the timing of the shot effects direction and how you can use this to beat your opponent.
2. Practice Your Power-Serve.
Each time you serve, you have the opportunity to perform a ‘power serve’ which is basically a faster serve that whizzes across the screen. This is good because it is harder for your opponent to return it. Even at the highest difficulty level, the computer will sometimes fail to return the ball properly when you power serve.
So how do you do it? Every time you serve there is a little sound on your Wii Mote that kind of sounds like a tennis ball being thrown in the air (which is to say that it sounds absolutely nothing like a tennis ball being thrown in the air). You need to hit the ball at the top of the serves arc which corresponds to the highest pitch in the little tennis ball sound. Some practice will help you to get this right most of the time, making your service game a real danger to opponents.
3. Tire Your Opponent Out.
This is one is mainly for the computer but I suppose it could work with your fat cousin as well. Basically, the computer opponents get more and more tired the more shots they make and the more effort they have to make. So if you give them lots of shots that are difficult to return they will dive all over the place and tire quickly.
When the computer players are tired they respond slower and cannot move as quickly making it easier for you to score. They also tend to make more mistakes allowing you to pick up easy points. Computer opponents that are tired stay tired for a whole game (as in one ‘round’ of tennis, not the whole best of five ‘game’) so tire them out early in the game to get maximum advantage.
4. Play From the Net.
This tip is especially important for the higher-skilled computer opponents. These guys are really good at putting a ball to where your back-court players aren’t, so don’t let them! Instead, use your front-court Mii to tire them out and only use your back-court Mii when you are ready to hit that killer forearm!
The only issue with this tip is you need to watch out for the quick return from your opponents front-court player as this can easily catch you out if you are not careful.
5. Buy Time by Lobbing It.
If your opponent has you on the rocks hit the ball high in the air to gain time. This will allow your players to move back into a better position making it harder for them to put one past you.
Your usual tactics should be to tire your opponent using front-court returns that force your opponent to chase the ball. Once they are tired, wait for a shot to your back-court player at the bottom right and hit the ball early to send the ball to the extreme left (if you are left-handed I suppose it might be easier doing this the other way round). By doing this you will either catch your opponent out completely or set yourself up for an easy smash down the court if your opponent manages to return.
Of course, human opponents can be a lot more challenging (and in some cases, annoying) but by mastering the basics with the computer you will be able to put up a good fight against anyone who dares face you across the digital court. Enjoy!

Wii Sports Tennis: Serve Really Fast.
You might wonder why there are times when your serve is really fast in Wii Sports Tennis. You try to sling your arm as hard as you can, but just can’t reproduce it. Well actually, the serve speed has nothing to do with your arm movement.
You have to time it just right so that when the ball is tossed in the air that it is hit it at the very top of the toss. If you make contact with the ball right at the top, even just a slow flick of the wrist will hit it really hard it to the other side.
